Data Base Error ... You're fired!!!

"Data base error ...no file found" ... You're fired!!!

That's the response millions of America workers could hear if the flawed Shuler-Tancredo immigration bill was to become law.

Requiring over 130 million US workers to prove they have the legal right to work, the SAVE ACT (HR4088) would force employers to submit to using a broken government database, so inaccurate that 12.7 million US-born and legal resident workers are categorized as undocumented workers. Once caught in this maze of bureaucratic incompetency, the SAVE Act would allow only ten days to prove ones eligibility to work or face mandatory termination.

In unsettled economic times, when many Americans are a single paycheck away from economic disaster, the last thing we need is another cynical election-year ploy to play to "the base" at the expense of working families. The American people want real solutions to real problems ... not cheap sound-bites masquerading as legislation.

Call your representative today, and tell them you want them to do the real work you hired them to do, and not concentrate on divisive distractions in hopes of saving their political hides in November.

Tell them to concentrate on addressing these economic problems. Tell them you want them to fix health care for all Americans. Tell them you want the education system fixed. Tell them to fix our broken immigration system. Tell them to stop wasting precious lives and needed resources in a war that should never have been authorized and should not be continued.

Tell them you will not settle for half-baked schemes and election-year ploys ... especially at the expense of millions of jobs that are needed to keep our heads just barely above water in tough economic times.

House Republicans Move Forward on Shuler-Tancredo Bill

Today the Republican leadership filed a "discharge petition" on the SAVE Act (Secure America through Verification and Enforcement Act) and have begun gathering the needed signatures to force the bill to the House floor for a vote.

A "discharge petition" is a special procedural motion that would allow the sponsors of the Shuler-Tancredo bill to take it straight to the floor of the House without having to go through the full committee process and then force a vote. 218 House members must sign the petition to allow it to go to the floor …the bill currently has 139 sponsors, including a group of 48 vulnerable freshman and conservative blue-dog Democrats.

The chief co-sponsors of the SAVE Act (HR. 4088) are Rep. Heath Shuler (D-North Carolina), Rep. Brian Bilbray (R-California), and Rep. Tom Tancredo (R-Colorado) who has made a career, including a failed presidential candidacy on anti-immigrant rhetoric. Rep. Bilbray leads the House Immigration Reform Caucus and is a former lobbyist of the Federation for American Immigration Reform, an organization recognized as a hate group by mainstream civil rights and research organizations like the Southern Poverty Law Center. For a list of co-sponsors on the SAVE Act, go to: http://thomas.loc.gov/cgi-bin/bdquery/z?d110:HR04088:

About the SAVE Act:
  • It would require more than six million employers to verify the work status of more than 130 million workers within four years, regardless of their status, using a federal database already known to have over 17 million errors.

It would result in 12.7 million US citizens being forced to have an already overtaxed bureaucracy correct their records within a ten day window, or face mandatory termination of employment.

  • It would make it easier for the government to put religious and humanitarian workers behind bars for so-called "alien smuggling" - - mandating penalties up to 5 years imprisonment

  • It would require all local law enforcement agencies to become immigration agents, requiring them to do immigration checks at every traffic stop and domestic dispute…. A policy that has been opposed by leading law enforcement organizations.

Facing the specter of having to run on their accomplishments this coming November, nervous Republicans are scrambling for an issue to distract the electorate from their dismal records. The SAVE Act is just a return to the short-sighted Sensenbrenner Bill (HR 4437) and represents more of the failure in leadership that has marked Republican efforts on this issue. We need leaders who will tackle tough issues and be willing to do the hard work necessary to solve complicated problem intelligently - not offer false promises, empty rhetoric, and cynical election-year ploys at the expense of immigrant families .

Please call your representative at 202-225-3121 now and urge them to oppose the SAVE Act.

Write Your Representative and tell them not to sign on to support the SAVE Act

Tancredo Univision Debate Ad Targets Latinos

Team Tancredo.org, the official campaign website for the Tancredo campaign, has released a new web ad touting Tom's refusal to take part in last nights Spanish language, "illegal alien debate" sponsored by Univision.

Judging from the comments left on Trancredo's blog announcement about the ad:

Absolutely one of the best ads I've seen - in message and in humor! I was laughing so hard, it brought tears to my eyes! I especially enjoyed seeing McCain in the back of the truck with his "friends".!

we can only assume that this is what passes for humor in the Tancredo camp.

I guess you can say at least Tom doesn't make any bones about his obvious disdain and utter lack of respect for Latinos … but then again, given the performance last night by the rest of the Republican field, it's not like they're exactly going out of their way to hide theirs either.

So how about from this point forward we just stop the whole charade about the "immigration crisis" being about the "rule of law" or "protecting American workers" or any of the other excuses given thus far. …it's all about scary brown people, always has been, always will be.

hit-tip to Liza at Culture Kitchen for the video find.

Tancredo's newest ad: Immigrants are Child Rapists

With each new ad from Team Tancrazy, the level of hysteria gets ratcheted up one more notch.

Last month it was terrorists flooding over the southern border to blow up a shopping mall near you.

Now comes his newest ad, claiming that immigrants are "pushing drugs, raping kids, and destroying lives"… Come on Tom just say it ….they're "a scourge that threatens the very future of our nation," and "are coming here to kill you and to kill me and our families."."….oh yeah, I forgot ... you used that one already.

I guess Tom just raised the bar again for the rest of the Republican field, so intent to "out Tancredo, Tancredo" …looks like they've got their work cut out for them huh?

It's tough to be crazier than a guy the US military wouldn't even accept because he was too fuckin nuts to be trusted killing people...and I mention that..."because someone needs to say it"

Tancrazy jumps the shark

Tom Tancredo is quickly reaching the point where he's become nothing more than a bizarre self-parody. Even for the nation's premier fear-mongering, racist lunatic, this one seem like a stretch. If I didn't know better, I might think his newest campaign ad was a skit on the SNL or a report from Colbert.

Unfortunately in a double-wide somewhere, there's a guy combing his mullet, yelling, "hell-yeah" as he watches this newest Tancredo ad.

I don't know whether I should be scared, or amused by this nutcase. Thankfully, he's giving up his congressional seat, and will hopefully sulk off to some cave somewhere once his campaign money runs out....maybe mullet-boy will save him a cold one and a stick of jerky, and they can have a par-tee.

Tancrazy call's for arrest of DREAM students at Capitol

It's not like Tam Tran and the other DREAM students haven't been through enough harassment already. After having her story published in a front page story in USA Today last week, the entire Tran family were arrested and detained by immigration official in what Representative Rep. Zoe Lofgren, (D-Calif), who chairs the House immigration subcommittee, characterized as a classic case of "witness intimidation."

Tran, whose parents escaped from Vietnam as "boatpeople" had testified earlier this year in front of Lofgren's committee on the plight of the thousands of immigrant children who were brought here by their undocumented parents and an early age, and now due to their undocumented status face uncertain futures.

It now appears that Colorado Congressman, and Republican Presidential long-shot, Tom Tancrazy wants to go after Tran again…along with a group of other DREAM Act students who were in Washington today at the invitation of Sen Dick Durbin (D-IL).

They were at the Capitol in support of the DREAM Act, a bill sponsored by Durbin, that would allow these young people, and thousands of others, the opportunity to continue on with their education and eventually earn the right to remain in this country legally.

Tancrazy, upon hearing of the planned arrival of the young people, immediately called the Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency and demand the arrest of the students.

Tancredo Asks Immigration Authorities to Detain Illegal Aliens Attending Durbin Event in U.S. Capitol

( WASHINGTON, D.C. ) – Representative Tom Tancredo (R-Littleton) today released a statement regarding an event Senator Dick Durbin (D-IL) reportedly plans to hold in conjunction with discussion of the DREAM ACT – an event that will be attended by several illegal aliens.

“I call on the Immigration and Customs Enforcement Agency to detain any illegal aliens at this press conference. Just because these illegal aliens are being used for political gain doesn’t mean they get immunity from the law.”

“If we can’t enforce our laws inside the building where American laws are made, where can we enforce them?”

Tancredo alerted the Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency earlier today regarding Durbin’s 3:00 PM meeting.

Link

For Tom, resorting to intimidation, even of children, seems to be his preferred method to silence political opponents. Perhaps he should have demanded that ICE detain Sen. Durbin as well for even bringing these children to Washington in the first place….since that's how Mr. Tancrazy wants all those who show compassion and humanity to be dealt with anyway.

New Report Looks at Growth of Nativism in Congress

A new report from Building Democracy Initiative examines the growing role of nativism in national politics. Chronicling the rise of the House Immigration Reform Caucus, the BDI report, Nativism in the House: A Report on the House Immigration Reform Caucus examines not only the growing influence of nativist and xenophobic philosophies in national politics, but the concerted effort of the far-right to bring their extreme ideological agenda to the forefront .

The "report tells us much regarding the shape that "immigration politics" and public policy is likely to take in the foreseeable future. The Caucus's extreme ideological agenda, long-standing ties to anti-immigrant groups, and cohesion in a fractured House of Representatives makes it a noxious ingredient in the melting pot of America. It has drawn even well-intentioned immigration reform proposals down into an abyss of nativism and xenophobia."

Nativism in the House: A Report on the House Immigration Reform Caucus

In the ebb and flow of nativist politics, the House Immigration Reform Caucus has been one of the most powerful and significant forces on Capitol Hill. With 110 congressmen and women as of this report, its members constitute fully one quarter of the House of Representatives. Members have introduced some of the most punitive legislation proposed during the last two House sessions. Their past chairman, Rep. Tom Tancredo (R-Colo.), is now running for president and participating in national debates. Their current chairman, Rep. Brian Bilbray (R-Calif.), is a former lobbyist for the Federation for American Immigration Reform (FAIR). Some of its members have helped legitimize vigilante organizations such as the Minutemen. While voters tend to view their representatives as individuals or by party affiliation, the members of the House Caucus have acted as a bloc. Collectively, they have stood athwart the legislative process, preventing the emergence of meaningful and humane policy choices. And they have gone all the while virtually unnoticed.

In this report, the Center for New Community's Building Democracy Initiative examines the House Immigration Reform Caucus.

The Anti-Immigrant Movement Sets the Stage

From the emergence of a new nativist movement in the late 1970s, groups such as the Federation for American Immigration Reform (FAIR) have sought influence inside Washington D.C….

Today, a dozen anti-immigrant organizations maintain national profiles. These groups have combined annual budgets of over twelve million dollars, and an active donor base of between six hundred thousand and seven hundred fifty thousand. As these national groups have expanded their influence, the number of state and local organizations has jumped up. Between January of 2005 and January of 2007, such groups have increased in number by 600 percent.

Formation of the Congressional Immigration Reform Caucus and Rep. Tom Tancredo

…Tom Tancredo founded the Congressional Immigration Reform Caucus (hereinafter the Caucus or HIRC) in May 1999, soon after he began his first term as a Republican congressman from Colorado's Sixth District. During its first years, the Caucus had few members and served largely as a platform for Tancredo's views on immigration….

On August 1, 2001—five weeks before the events of 9-11—Tancredo introduced H.R. 2712, a bill intended to begin a moratorium on legal immigration, according to the Library of Congress' THOMAS website. Much of the recent public discussion on immigration policy has been voiced about "illegal" immigration. The particulars of this bill, however, demonstrate that opposition to legal entry remains an integral part of so-called immigration reform. This initial proposal would have cut the number of visas issued for family-sponsored immigrants to zero. And it would have cut the visas for "priority workers" to zero. The bill was referred to committee, however, and went nowhere. Undeterred, Tancredo introduced H.R. 3222 on November 1, 2001 with the intention of sharply reducing the number of H1-B visas issued to high-tech professionals. That bill also was referred and died in a subcommittee.

It is useful to remember that questions related to immigration have always been intertwined with questions of national identity. As Rep. Tancredo told one interviewer, "…if we don't control immigration, legal and illegal, we will eventually reach the point where it won't be what kind of a nation we are, balkanized or united, we will have to face the fact that we are no longer a nation at all…" His is a sentiment which has been oft repeated by members of the HIRC….

The year 2005 was a watershed year for the anti-immigrant movement. In April, the Minuteman organization was launched with an armed civilian "border watch" in Arizona. Although President Bush described the Minutemen as "vigilantes," the HIRC defended and praised the group in a "Field Report" entitled "Results and Implications of the Minuteman Project." In a separate statement, Caucus member Phil Gingrey (R-Ga.) said, "The Minuteman Project is a shining example of how community initiative and involvement can help make America a safer, better place to live." The sentiment was echoed by the eight other congressmen cited in the press release.

Also in 2005, Tancredo personally introduced a resolution proposing that the Constitution be amended to establish English as the "official language," another resolution "recognizing the importance of Western civilization," legislation to enhance border enforcement and curtail H1-B visas, as well as several amendments aimed at changing federal enforcement policies. He introduced eleven different measures in all, none of which succeeded. But Tancredo had raised the flag of the anti-immigrant movement within Congress. By August, the Caucus registry had grown to 82 members of the House.

By December of that year, the House passed H.R. 4437, known popularly as the "Sensenbrenner Bill." James Sensenbrenner, a Republican from Wisconsin's 5th District, was first elected to congress in 1978, and was chairman of the House Judiciary Committee at the time. He was not then, and is not now, a member of Tancredo's Immigration Reform Caucus. Nevertheless, H.R. 4437 was widely regarded by both immigrant rights activists and moderates as an unnecessarily harsh bill that was unlikely to pass in the Senate. It would have turned undocumented immigrants into felons (current law considers this violation a misdemeanor) and thus make them ineligible for citizenship in the future. It would have also criminalized anyone who gave them assistance of any kind, including providing them with simple social welfare or routine medical services. The bill also called for the construction of 700 miles of fencing on the southern border.

The debate in Congress became so vicious that even conservatives were forced to comment on its racism. "Some anti-immigrant Republicans are guilty of demagoguery and racism," one Republican governor, Mike Huckabee from Arkansas, told the press.
